Claudin de Sermisy wrote hundreds of sacred compositions but was also well known as a composer of chansons. He rejected the complex polyphony popular in the Lowlands and opted instead for a homophonic, three- or four-voice texture. One of his stylistic traits is found in the opening bar of Tant que vivray, a half-quarter-quarter rhythm. Sermisy’s works were well-known throughout Europe and were often appropriated by Protestant composers, although he was a devout Catholic.
